San Antonio’s streets have been hit by a ruthless bandit who struck six national chain stores over three days in January 2023. Now, the alleged mastermind, James Anthony Kirkwood, 68, is behind bars facing federal charges.
Kirkwood was apprehended on February 6 and swiftly transferred to federal custody after being held at Bexar County Jail. The spree included heists from Dollar General and Dollar Tree stores, as well as PetSmart and Big Lots locations in the San Antonio area.
The DOJ has charged Kirkwood with robbery interfering with interstate commerce, a charge that could land him up to 20 years behind bars if convicted. A federal district court judge will decide on any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.
Leading the investigation are the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the San Antonio Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney William Calve is handling the prosecution of the case.
Court documents serve as a stark reminder that even the most brazen criminals can be brought to justice. Kirkwood remains in custody, facing the full weight of federal law for his alleged crimes.
As always, the criminal complaint against Kirkwood is merely an allegation, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
