BEAUMONT, Texas – In a chilling turn of events, Ahmed Abdalla Allam, 26, from Brooklyn, NY, has been indicted for a federal firearms violation in the Eastern District of Texas. U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston announced the charges today.
Allam, who was named in an indictment by a federal grand jury on Feb. 1, 2023, appeared in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Zack Hawthorn and was ordered to be held pending a detention hearing.
Court records reveal that on Jan. 29, 2023, Allam was found with a multi-caliber rifle within the forbidden 1,000-foot radius of St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School in Beaumont. The accused also possessed a 30-round magazine and 150 rounds of ammunition.
“The community of St. Anthony’s, including parents, teachers, and administrators, are to be commended for remaining vigilant and reporting their suspicions,” Featherston stated. “If you see something suspicious – say something. You may save a life.”
If convicted, Allam could face up to 5 years in federal prison.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence across neighborhoods. The Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy on May 26, 2021, focusing on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting prevention efforts, strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Despite the charges being an allegation, all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The investigation into Allam’s actions is ongoing and involves several local and federal agencies, including the Beaumont Police Department, Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, ATF, FBI, Port Arthur Fire Department, and Montgomery County Fire Marshall. Assistant U.S. Attorney John B. Ross is handling the prosecution.
