Jeremy Michael Benner, Firearms Dealing, California 2024

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Jeremy Michael Benner, 40, of San Diego, is headed to federal prison for five years after being convicted of unlawfully dealing in firearms. U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced the sentence today, a small victory in a state drowning in gun violence. Benner will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term.

The feds say Benner wasn’t just making a quick buck; he was actively fueling the pipeline of illegal weapons. Between September 2022 and August 2023, Benner repeatedly sold firearms to a confidential informant in Vallejo. Court documents reveal four separate transactions, each one a blatant disregard for the law. One of the guns had already been reported stolen – a clear sign of the shady sources Benner was using. Three others came equipped with extended magazines, designed to inflict maximum damage.

What makes this case particularly galling? Benner didn’t have a license to deal firearms, and as a previously convicted felon, he wasn’t even eligible to get one. He was operating completely outside the law, knowingly peddling weapons to who knows who. This wasn’t about sport shooting; it was about profit, and the consequences could have been deadly.

The bust was a joint operation led by the FBI’s Solano County Violent Crimes Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian T. Kinsella handled the prosecution, building a solid case against Benner. These agencies are working overtime, trying to stem the flow of illegal guns, but they need more resources and a real commitment from lawmakers to make a lasting difference.

This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The Department of Justice relaunched a strengthened PSN in 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement. You can find more information about PSN at Justice.gov/PSN.

Benner’s conviction is also part of a larger effort – the Sacramento Region/San Francisco Bay Area Cross-Jurisdictional Firearms Trafficking Strike Force. Launched in July 2021, this strike force, led by U.S. Attorneys and supported by the ATF and local police, targets illegal gun trafficking networks across key regions. They’re using data and intelligence to track patterns and identify suspects, aiming to disrupt the flow of weapons before they reach the streets. It’s a start, but the problem is far from solved. The streets of California remain awash in illegal firearms, and until we address the root causes of gun violence, these convictions will only be temporary fixes.
