Sanchez-Velasquez Sentenced for 6th Illegal Entry into U.S.

Alexis Leonel Sanchez-Velasquez, a 26-year-old Guatemalan man, has been sentenced to prison for his second conviction for illegally entering the United States.

Sanchez-Velasquez has illegally crossed the southern border of the United States six times in under two years, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, G. Zachary Terwilliger.

On April 7, 2013, Sanchez-Velasquez was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol near La Joya, Texas, for illegally entering the United States. He was removed at taxpayers’ expense on April 12, 2013. This was not his first or last time crossing the border.

Sanchez-Velasquez reentered the United States on multiple occasions, with his most recent reentry occurring sometime after July 2014. He worked illegally for the past five years before being arrested on March 29 for driving under the influence.

Sanchez-Velasquez was later convicted of that offense and sentenced to prison for his second conviction of illegally entering the United States. U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady sentenced Sanchez-Velasquez to 60 days in prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, along with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), announced the sentencing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Carina A. Cuellar and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick D. Reid prosecuted the case.
