MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a move that has left some scratching their heads, a local official has been allowed to continue in their role despite controversy surrounding their appointment.
The United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama has appointed Sandra J. Stewart to continue serving as the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. Chief United States District Judge Emily C. Marks administered the oath of office on April 22, 2022. Stewart’s appointment became effective on April 25, 2022.
Stewart’s appointment has raised concerns among some in the community, who point to her lengthy career in the justice system and its potential impact on her ability to remain impartial.
As United States Attorney, Ms. Stewart is the chief federal law enforcement officer responsible for all federal criminal prosecutions and civil litigation involving the United States within the Middle District of Alabama. The Middle District consists of 23 counties and includes the cities of Montgomery, Dothan, Auburn, and Phenix City.
United States Attorney Stewart has served in various roles since 2002, initially working for the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. During her time in the Northern District, Ms. Stewart served as Chief of the Appellate Division and as First Assistant United States Attorney.
Prior to joining the Department of Justice, United States Attorney Stewart spent approximately 16 years working for the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. While there, she served as the Chief Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Appeals and Capital Litigation Divisions, and as an Assistant Attorney General with the Alabama Department of Mental Health.
