Assault on Jail Guard Lands Sanostee Man 19 Months in Prison

In a disturbing display of violence, Zachariah Nez, 25, of Sanostee, New Mexico, punched a jail guard at Core Civic in Cibola County, prompting a 19-month prison sentence for assault and violating the terms of his supervised release.

According to court documents, Nez was originally sentenced to 72 months in prison for voluntary manslaughter on October 11, 2017. Upon his release, he was placed on three years of supervised release.

However, Nez’s troubles didn’t end there. On September 3, 2023, he was arrested for violating the conditions of his supervised release and was detained at Core Civic. It was there that he allegedly punched a jail guard, who fortunately was uninjured.

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez announced the sentencing, stating that Nez’s actions would not be tolerated. The United States Marshal Service investigated the case with assistance from Core Civic, and Assistant United States Attorney Joseph M. Spindle is prosecuting the case.

Nez’s supervised release was revoked, and he will now serve his original 72-month sentence, followed by three years of supervised release upon completion. There is no parole in the federal system, and Nez will have to face the consequences of his actions.

The sentencing serves as a stark reminder that violence and disrespect towards law enforcement will not be tolerated. Nez’s actions demonstrate a complete disregard for the law and the safety of those around him.
