BOSTON – A brazen attempt to obtain a U.S. passport under false pretenses has landed a Dominican national in federal court. Adolfo Santana Gonzalez, 31, is facing charges of passport fraud and identity theft, according to a statement released today by the Department of Justice.
Gonzalez is accused of submitting a U.S. passport application in November 2016 at a Worcester post office, using not his own identity, but that of another individual – complete with a stolen social security number. The indictment alleges Gonzalez knowingly misrepresented himself to secure official government documentation.
The scheme, if proven, carries significant consequences. A conviction on the charge of passport fraud could result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years, followed by three years of supervised release. Gonzalez also faces a potential fine of $250,000. But the legal troubles don’t end there; upon completion of any sentence, Gonzalez will be subject to deportation.
Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb and David W. Hall, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security, Boston Field Office, jointly announced the charges. The investigation received assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, highlighting a coordinated effort to crack down on passport fraud.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine of Weinreb’s Major Crimes Unit is spearheading the prosecution. It’s a clear signal that federal authorities are taking these cases seriously, protecting the integrity of U.S. travel documents and pursuing those who attempt to exploit the system.
It’s crucial to remember that the details presented in the indictment represent allegations at this stage. Adolfo Santana Gonzalez is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
