Seattle – Filmore Doyoon Kim, a 40-year-old Seattle resident with a history of violent threats and attacks, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for attempting to purchase a firearm just days after threatening his probation officer. The sentence, announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller, came from U.S. District Judge Lauren King who emphasized Kim’s dangerous nature.
Kim, who previously served 15 months for burglary, which included breaking into a neighbor’s apartment and leaving a blood-soaked threat, attempted to purchase a handgun at a federal firearms store on February 13, 2025. He lied on the form, claiming no convictions punishable by over a year in jail, but was caught when his background check revealed his prior offense.
The judge cited Kim’s repeated threats against corrections officers and others, calling him “a danger to the public.” Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg argued for the maximum sentence, highlighting Kim’s attempt to circumvent gun laws after threatening violence. Following his prison term, Kim will be on supervised release for three years.
Investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) led to Kim’s conviction. Greenberg’s prosecution ensured justice was served in this case involving a repeat offender who poses a significant threat.
Kim’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal firearm purchases and the importance of stringent background checks.
