Tucson Man Indicted for Second Degree Murder

A 34-year-old Tucson man has been indicted on a charge of Second Degree Murder. Santiago Luis Valencia, Jr., an enrolled member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, was charged with the crime after a verbal altercation turned physical on June 15, 2024.

The victim, whose name has not been released, died the following day due to injuries sustained during the fight. Witnesses claim that Valencia was the initial aggressor and struck the victim in the back of the head against a windowsill.

According to Assistant United States Attorneys Nathaniel J. Walters and Caroline Allen, the maximum penalty for Second Degree Murder is life in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and five years of supervised release.

An indictment is merely a method of charging a person with a crime and does not imply guilt. Valencia is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that proves his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Assistant United States Attorneys Nathaniel J. Walters and Caroline Allen are handling the prosecution. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation in this case.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, has not released a statement on the case. However, the public can follow the office on X @USAO_AZ for the latest news.
