Dahntay Dunbar, Arson, Arizona 2024

Fire Rages at Grand Canyon National Park Cabin

Flagstaff resident Dahntay Dunbar, 21, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for setting fire to a cabin within Grand Canyon National Park. The cabin, the residence of his former girlfriend, was left with scorching burn damage, smoke damage to the walls, ceiling, and other parts of the cabin.

Dunbar pleaded guilty to Arson of a Dwelling, which occurred on July 8, 2024, in the Grand Canyon National Park. The incident took place between May 17, 2024, and May 18, 2024. Dunbar broke into the locked cabin and found a bottle of clear liquor, which he dumped on a bed. He then took a lighter and lit one of his former girlfriend’s shirts on fire, placing it on the bed.

The fire started to burn, and Dunbar left the cabin. A bystander witnessed the fire and was able to put most of it out before the fire department arrived. Dunbar was arrested on other charges shortly after the incident and confessed to committing the arson.

National Park Service special agents and rangers, assisted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, conducted the investigation. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Flagstaff, handled the prosecution.

As part of his sentence, Judge Roslyn O. Silver ordered Dunbar to pay $20,146.13 in restitution. Dunbar will serve 60 months of supervised release following his 20-month prison sentence.

The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, will continue to monitor the case and provide updates. The public can visit http://www.justice.gov/usao/az/ for more information on the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, and follow the office on @USAO_AZ for the latest news.
