Christopher Barry, Receiving Child Pornography, New York 2023

A 42-year-old Saratoga Springs man took a guilty plea to receiving child pornography, a serious crime that could land him behind bars for up to 20 years.

Christopher Barry, 42, of Saratoga Springs, New York, pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography, including images of prepubescent minors. This despicable act is a slap in the face to the community and a serious threat to the safety of our children.

The investigation began in June 2021 and continued until January 2022. During this time, Barry received and possessed child pornography, including images of minors. His actions were a brazen disregard for the law and a clear threat to the well-being of our children.

Barry’s guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Matthew Scarpino, Special Agent in Charge of the Buffalo Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat child exploitation.

Project Safe Childhood has marshaled federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet. The initiative has also identified and rescued victims of child exploitation.

Barry will be sentenced on August 27, 2024, by United States District Judge Anne M. Nardacci. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 5 years and up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life. The court may also impose a fine, restitution, and forfeiture of the phones Barry used to commit his offenses. Barry must also register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander P. Wentworth-Ping is prosecuting this case as part of Project Safe Childhood. HSI investigated the case, and their efforts have brought a guilty plea from Barry.
