A 40-year-old man from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, is facing 33 counts of filing false tax returns. Adam M. Lashinski, 40, allegedly prepared and filed dozens of fraudulent federal individual income tax returns for his acquaintances between 2013 and 2015.
According to the indictment, Lashinski falsely claimed to be a certified public accountant and repeatedly filed returns in the names of the taxpayers that omitted taxable income and claimed false adjustments, deductions, and business expenses. This resulted in larger refunds than the taxpayers were actually entitled to receive.
Lashinski allegedly obtained additional profits by filing documentation with the IRS to cause portions of the fraudulent refunds to be paid directly into his personal bank account. The indictment charges Lashinski with 33 counts of filing false tax returns.
The case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS, with assistance from the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert M. Lewis is prosecuting the case.
Lashinski is expected to make his initial appearance in U.S. District Court at a later date. The charges contained in the indictment are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Minnesota, can be reached at (612) 664-5600 for more information.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance in preventing tax-related crimes. Lashinski’s alleged actions not only cheated the government out of revenue but also undermined the trust of those who relied on him for tax preparation services.
