SAVANNAH, GA – Another dangerous felon off the streets of Savannah. Ra’Quavius Rawls, 24, formerly listed among “Savannah’s Top Ten Most Wanted,” is facing federal charges after a routine traffic stop turned up a loaded firearm. The indictment, handed down by a grand jury in the Southern District of Georgia, accuses Rawls of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person – a charge that carries serious weight and could put him back behind bars for a significant stretch.
The bust went down July 24, 2024, when Savannah Police Department officers acted on an anonymous tip pinpointing Rawls’ location at a local gas station. As officers arrived on scene, Rawls attempted to flee in a vehicle. A subsequent traffic stop quickly identified Rawls as a passenger. A search of the vehicle revealed the damning evidence: a firearm stashed in the passenger side glove box. Sources close to the investigation indicate Rawls has a prior criminal record, making firearm possession illegal.
“Removing illegally possessed firearms from convicted felons plays a key role in reducing violent crime in our communities,” stated Margaret Heap, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. Heap’s statement underscores the federal government’s commitment to targeting individuals who pose a threat to public safety, and sending a clear message that illegal gun possession will not be tolerated. This isn’t just about one gun; it’s about disrupting the cycle of violence plaguing Savannah.
Acting Assistant Special Agent Robert Davis of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) highlighted the importance of interagency collaboration. “The collaboration between the ATF and local law enforcement is essential in identifying and apprehending individuals who pose a threat to public safety, particularly those on lists like ‘Savannah’s Top Ten Most Wanted’,” Davis said. The successful operation is a testament to the effectiveness of combined resources and shared intelligence.
The case is being spearheaded by the ATF, working in tandem with the Savannah Police Department. Special Assistant United States Attorney Makeia R. Jonese is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States. While Rawls has been indicted, it’s crucial to remember that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the evidence already uncovered paints a grim picture.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds, bringing you the unvarnished truth from the streets of Savannah.
