Fresno Men Charged for Series of Vehicle Pipe-Bombings

FRESNO, CA – Two Fresno men are facing serious federal charges following a string of brazen pipe-bombings that rocked the city between November 2022 and February 2023. Scott Eric Anderson, 43, and Paul New, 55, were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to destroy by means of an explosive device and malicious destruction by means of an explosive device, according to a Department of Justice announcement.

The pair allegedly targeted unoccupied vehicles and property, with the blasts damaging vehicles belonging to two auto businesses on Clinton Avenue. The attacks escalated on February 19th, when a pipe bomb caused significant damage to a vehicle used by a local home health care business on Fallbrook Avenue. Investigators say Anderson, in a disturbing twist, sometimes documented his crimes on video.

Beyond the bombings, Anderson is also accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He’s already got a prior conviction for carrying a loaded and concealed weapon, making any firearm possession illegal. This adds another layer to the already complex case and could significantly increase his potential sentence if convicted.

The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Fresno Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, has brought these alleged acts of violence to light. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael G. Tierney is leading the prosecution, promising a vigorous pursuit of justice.

If convicted, both Anderson and New face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the malicious destruction charges, and an additional five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the conspiracy charge. Anderson, due to the firearm violation, could face up to 10 more years in prison and another $250,000 fine. However, sentencing will be at the discretion of the court, taking into account federal guidelines and statutory factors.
