BUFFALO, N.Y. – A former Boy Scout employee has pleaded guilty to a grim charge of possessing child pornography, including prepubescent images. Russell Ruth, 34, from Lyons, NY, faces a severe penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000 for his despicable act.
According to U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., the crime was discovered when Yahoo! intercepted five files containing child pornography uploaded by Ruth between March 13 and June 7, 2018. The company then reported the findings to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
During a search warrant executed at his residence on June 7, 2018, investigators found over 10,285 images and 602 videos of child pornography, some depicting prepubescent children and others involving violence. Ruth had been employed by the Boy Scouts of America in Ovid, NY area.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa M. Marangola is handling the case, which was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin Kelly.
Ruth’s sentencing is set for August 7, 2019, at 11:30 a.m., before Chief U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr.
