Washington – Sean Branch, 31, has been found guilty of first-degree burglary while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, and more, in a harrowing home invasion attack on a woman and her twelve-year-old son in Southeast Washington D.C. The verdict comes after a trial at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
Branch, who argued with the victim over his belongings, broke into her apartment on September 11, 2020, armed and masked. He struck the woman, caused her to bleed extensively, and threatened both victims before fleeing. The victims identified Branch based on his voice and the attack’s context.
The MPD recovered surveillance footage of Branch escaping through a balcony, and DNA testing linked him to clothing found at the scene. Branch faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela Smith announced the guilty verdict on July 3, 2024. The trial was presided over by Honorable Michael O’Keefe, with sentencing pending.
This case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, including Assistant U.S. Attorney Danielle White, who indicted the case in 2021. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew Covert and Katharine Yaske are prosecuting the case within the Domestic Violence Unit.
