Sean Brewer, Drug & Gun Offenses, Oldsmar FL, 2024

OLDSMAR, FL – Sean Peter Brewer, 36, is headed to federal prison for seven years after pleading guilty to a trifecta of serious offenses: possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, trafficking methamphetamine, and using that firearm while committing a drug crime. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday, bringing an end to a case that began with a routine welfare check turned bust.

The trouble started November 11, 2022, when Clearwater Police Department (CPD) officers found Brewer unconscious behind the wheel of his car at a Gulf to Bay Boulevard gas station. Emergency responders assessed Brewer, but it quickly became clear this wasn’t a medical issue alone. A failed field sobriety test led to Brewer’s arrest for driving under the influence and a subsequent search that unearthed a criminal’s toolkit.

Inside a backpack, officers discovered a digital scale and plastic baggies – clear indicators of narcotics distribution. Marijuana and assorted pills were also present, but the real problem was 61 grams of methamphetamine and a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield pistol. A “Cash App” debit card registered to “$seanbrew87” further linked Brewer to illicit activity. The arrest came at a particularly bad time for Brewer, who already had a felony conviction for unlawful use of a two-way communication device, disqualifying him from legally possessing any firearms.

Federal prosecutors, Assistant U.S. Attorneys David W.A. Chee and David P. Sullivan, built a solid case, successfully demonstrating Brewer’s intent to distribute the methamphetamine and his unlawful possession of the handgun. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) partnered with the Clearwater Police Department on the investigation, combining resources to bring Brewer to justice. The seven-year sentence reflects the severity of combining drug trafficking with illegal firearm possession.

This case isn’t an isolated incident, but rather part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN) initiative. PSN aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement agencies at all levels and the communities they serve. The program focuses on building trust, supporting community-based violence prevention, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts, with a focus on measurable results.

Brewer’s conviction serves as a stark warning: convicted felons caught with firearms and dealing drugs will face significant federal penalties. The ATF and local police departments continue to work together to remove dangerous individuals and illegal weapons from the streets of Florida, aiming to make communities safer one arrest at a time. The Tampa Field Division of the ATF played a key role in securing this conviction.
