Seattle Felon Kim Sentenced for Gun Threat

SEATTLE – A Seattle resident with a violent history was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for attempting to purchase a firearm while on probation for previous crimes, according to the Department of Justice.

Filmore Doyoon Kim, 40, was caught trying to buy a handgun just days after sending threatening emails to his probation officer. In court documents, it’s noted that Kim has a history of making death threats and violently attacking neighbors, including leaving a blood-stained note with a threat to kill.

In February 2025, Kim attempted to lie on his firearm purchase form to conceal his prior convictions, but the ATF was alerted after the background check revealed his criminal record. Judge Lauren King emphasized the severity of Kim’s actions, stating he posed a danger to the public.

Kim had previously served 15 months for burglary in 2022, during which he broke into a neighbor’s apartment and beat him unconscious in front of a child. He also has multiple harassment convictions for threats against apartment managers and others. On probation for the burglary case, Kim continued to threaten violence through email.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg advocated for the maximum sentence, highlighting that Kim’s actions were an attempt to subvert background check laws meant to keep guns out of dangerous hands. Following his prison term, Kim will be on supervised release for three years.

The ATF and the Washington State Department of Corrections investigated the case, with Greenberg handling the prosecution.
