Samuel N. Rezene, a 38-year-old gang member from Seattle with a rap sheet that includes drug trafficking and promoting prostitution, was sentenced today to four years in prison for illegal firearm possession. Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller announced the sentence, which also includes three years of supervised release.
Rezene’s criminal history is marked by multiple shooting incidents, including a February 2012 tragedy where his girlfriend was shot and killed while riding in his car. Less than three months after being released from a 92-month prison term, Rezene was again caught with a firearm, this time after crashing his parents’ car and leaving the weapon at the scene.
“As far as I can tell, this defendant wants to be taken out of society,” said U.S. District Judge James L. Robart during the sentencing hearing. “You don’t get a Glock 9 to protect yourself; you get that to be back in the trade.”
The firearm found in Rezene’s car was linked to multiple shooting incidents before his release and a September 3, 2023, homicide in Seattle. Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg argued for a top-of-the-guidelines sentence, emphasizing the federal firearms statutes exist to keep weapons out of the hands of individuals like Rezene.
Rezene’s history includes two drug robberies that set off a violent chain of events, culminating in his shooting at a gas station in Renton in 2014. Despite surviving the attack and being released from the hospital, he continued to engage in violence, leading to further convictions and sentences.
The investigation was led by the Seattle Police Department with assistance from the FBI, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Todd Greenberg.
