Jasper Kilmer Hillman Bell, Threatening a Federal Official, Washington 2016

SEATTLE – Jasper Kilmer Hillman Bell, 28, was sentenced to two months in prison for threatening former Congressman Jim McDermott, according to U.S. Attorney Annette L. Hayes.

In April 2016, Bell, enraged over the Democratic primary election process, made multiple phone calls to McDermott’s staff and threatened to cut out the congressman’s tongue. He later showed up at McDermott’s Seattle office demanding entry. Judge Robert S. Lasnik called Bell’s actions “Just so wrong on so many levels,” noting the proportionate law enforcement response.

Records indicate Bell had written to McDermott three times about the Super Delegate controversy and called his offices numerous times, often expressing anger over protestor arrests. On April 22nd alone, he called the Seattle office seventeen times and the Washington DC office six times in a single fifty-minute period.

Bell’s threats were not just verbal; he pounded on the Congressman’s locked doors demanding entry. He was arrested by Seattle Police later that evening.

Judge Lasnik ordered Bell to perform 240 hours of community service with AIDS patients and the poor, groups McDermott has supported throughout his career. Bell must also research and produce reports on McDermott’s long career and Jack Hammann’s book ‘On American Soil,’ which investigates African-American soldiers wrongly convicted at Fort Lawton.

The investigation was conducted by the Seattle Police Department, U.S. Capitol Police, and the FBI, with prosecution handled by Assistant United States Attorney Todd Greenberg.
