Newark, N.J. – Dr. Ritesh Kalra, 51, of Secaucus, New Jersey, faces a five-count Complaint for distributing opioids without medical purpose, soliciting sexual favors from patients in exchange for prescriptions, and defrauding Medicaid by billing for non-existent appointments.
Kalra made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge André M. Espinosa, where he was released on home incarceration with a $100,000 bond and prohibited from practicing medicine or prescribing medication.
‘Physicians hold a position of profound responsibility,’ said U.S. Attorney Alina Habba. ‘Kalra used his position to fuel addiction, exploit patients for sex, and defraud Medicaid, violating the law and endangering lives.’
FBI Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy emphasized that the investigation highlights Kalra’s disregard for patient care, using them for personal gain, while HHS-OIG Special Agent in Charge Naomi Gruchacz stated that Kalra exploited individuals struggling with addiction for his own gratification.
Documents and court statements reveal that Kalra operated a pill mill, prescribing high-dose opioids to patients without medical necessity. Female patients alleged sexual misconduct by Kalra in return for prescriptions.
‘Physicians who recklessly distribute controlled substances undermine efforts against the opioid crisis,’ Gruchacz said. ‘Kalra’s actions betray his professional responsibility to serve the public health and well-being.’
