Craig Callaway, Mail-In Ballot Fraud, New Jersey 2022

CAMDEN, N.J. – The grimy halls of justice have dealt a heavy blow to Atlantic City’s political landscape, as Craig Callaway, the former President of the City Council and influential organizer, has been sentenced to 24 months for his brazen scheme to rig the November 8, 2022 general election.

Callaway, now 64 years old, pleaded guilty in a federal court under the stern gaze of Chief U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb, admitting to orchestrating a fraudulent procurement, casting, and tabulation of mail-in ballots. His plot was as devious as it was daring, promising cash incentives to individuals who would act as unauthorized messengers for voters wanting to vote by mail.

The scheme unraveled when these so-called messengers, under Callaway’s direction, collected Vote-By-Mail Applications from the Atlantic County Clerk’s Office and signed them with forged identities. Instead of delivering the ballots directly to the voters, they funneled them back to Callaway and his cronies, who then cast them in names they had no right to.

Many of these ballots were cast for voters who had confirmed that they did not vote in person or by mail, nor had they given anyone permission to vote on their behalf. This brazen act of electoral chicanery was a stark reminder that voter fraud is an affront to the democratic process, and it will not be tolerated in New Jersey.

U.S. Attorney Alina Habba emphasized, ‘Today’s sentence sends a clear message: those who seek to undermine New Jersey’s electoral process face serious consequences.’ FBI Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy echoed the sentiment, underscoring the commitment of law enforcement to protect the right to vote.

In addition to his prison term, Callaway has been sentenced to three years of supervised release. This sentence leaves no doubt that those who seek to corrupt the democratic process will face the full weight of the law.
