Mohammed Ali Kanawati, Controlled Substances Act Violations, Ohio 2026

⏱ 2 min read

Cleveland authorities have raked in a whopping $4.3M in the first quarter of 2026, largely due to a dentist’s hefty fine and a lab’s settlement over Medicare scams.

Dr. Mohammed Ali Kanawati, a Pepper Pike dentist, coughed up $450,000 to settle charges of mishandling controlled substances. The fine comes on top of a Houston man’s conviction for allegedly scamming Medicare out of $200,000.

U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer led the charge in collecting the funds, which also include restitution paid to victims and money owed to the U.S. government.

The totals represent a significant haul for the Northern District of Ohio, which covers 40 counties. The funds will be used to compensate victims, cover costs, and fund law enforcement efforts.
