A 44-year-old Morrow County man is headed to the big house after racking up 14+ years for a pair of brazen bank heists near Polaris mall in Columbus, Ohio. James Travis Scurlock’s get-rich-quick scheme involved robbing the same Huntington Bank branch on Gemini Place not once, but twice.
Scurlock’s first heist went down on March 6, 2025. He donned a black sweatshirt, jeans, white Nike shoes, black gloves, and a white camouflage mask to conceal his identity. The wannabe mastermind initially inquired about opening a bank account, but things took a dark turn when he whipped out a handgun and ordered the teller to fill his backpack with cash.
The first robbery yielded a paltry $13,700, but Scurlock’s second heist on May 16, 2025, netted a much bigger score – $27,700. In a brazen move, he pointed his firearm at a teller and ordered her to the vault, where he stuffed even more cash into his backpack.
Scurlock’s crime spree came to an end in June 2025, when he was charged. He pleaded guilty in October 2025 and is now facing a 171-month sentence for his crimes. Senior U.S. District Judge James L. Graham handed down the sentence, which is a fitting punishment for a man who put innocent lives at risk for a quick buck.
