A Minnesota woman who used to call Holliston, Mass. home, swiped over $100,000 in COVID-19 rental aid in Los Angeles last year.
Yvonette Joseph, 45, allegedly received the Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) funds after fake tenants identified her as the landlord of a property in LA.
According to prosecutors, Joseph wired the cash to Nigeria and a cryptocurrency exchange, a digital marketplace where users buy, sell and trade crypto.
The ERA program was created by Congress in 2021 to provide financial assistance to low-income households struggling to pay rent during the pandemic.
Joseph faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and restitution if convicted of the charges.
