New Haven’s postal system was rocked by a string of sophisticated mail thefts. Xavier Holman Jr., 34, of Secaucus, New Jersey, has been sentenced to three years of probation for his brazen scheme that netted over $1.5 million in stolen checks and money orders.
United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, David X. Sullivan, announced Holman’s punishment, which includes a six-month home detention term. The judge also mandated 150 hours of community service.
Holman’s criminal spree began in December 2022 and lasted until June 2023. He targeted USPS collection boxes at 95 Fountain Street in New Haven and two locations in West Haven, using keys to gain access to the blue bins.
On June 12, 2023, Holman was caught red-handed attempting to swipe mail from a West Haven post office. His arrest yielded two stolen keys, over 3,000 pieces of pilfered mail, and equipment for processing credit cards. The face value of the stolen checks alone exceeded $1.5 million.
Holman pleaded guilty to theft of mail on November 20, 2024. The investigation was a joint effort between the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and local law enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel E. Cummings prosecuted the case.
