Sergio Jonathan Caal-Melendez, 54, Charged with Illegal Re-entry in Pennsylvania
Wilmington, DE – Sergio Jonathan Caal-Melendez, a 54-year-old Wilmington resident, has been charged with illegal re-entry after deportation, announced United States Attorney Louis D. Lappen. The indictment alleges that on or about November 27, 2017, Caal-Melendez, an alien, and native and citizen of Guatemala, was found in the United States after having been deported from the United States on or about May 21, 2008
According to the indictment, Caal-Melendez is accused of violating federal law by re-entering the country after being deported. If convicted, he faces a maximum possible sentence of two years.
The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations (“ERO”), and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah M. Wolfe.
An Indictment, Information or Criminal Complaint is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Caal-Melendez is currently being held without bail. His case is pending in federal court.
