FORT WAYNE, IN – Seth Bireley, 35, is headed to federal prison for five years after admitting to ransacking the property of a recently deceased resident and making off with guns and ammunition. Chief Judge Holly A. Brady of the U.S. District Court handed down the 60-month sentence on Thursday, followed by two years of supervised release.
According to court documents, Bireley, already saddled with multiple felony convictions, unlawfully entered a Fort Wayne residence on February 24th and March 2nd, 2023. He didn’t break in, exactly. He just… helped himself to the deceased’s firearms and ammo. The details of how he gained access remain murky, but the outcome is clear: another convicted felon with guns he shouldn’t have.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation, with a helping hand from the Fort Wayne Police Department. Agents pieced together the evidence, proving Bireley’s involvement in the theft. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacey R. Speith successfully prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and ultimately, the lengthy prison term.
This isn’t just about stolen property. Federal officials are framing the case as a win for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in 2021, PSN focuses on building trust with communities, supporting violence prevention groups, and, crucially, strategic enforcement – like putting guys like Bireley behind bars.
The Department of Justice, through U.S. Attorney Clifford D. Johnson, touts PSN as a way to make neighborhoods safer. But for the family of the deceased, and for the residents of Fort Wayne, the real safety comes from keeping repeat offenders from acquiring weapons. Five years isn’t a guarantee, but it’s a start.
Bireley’s record wasn’t detailed in the press release, but federal prosecutors clearly used it to their advantage, painting him as a danger to the community. Now, it’s up to the federal prison system to manage him – and hopefully, prevent him from adding to his rap sheet once he’s released.
