Keon J. Carwell, a 39-year-old Memphis fugitive, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for possessing seven firearms as a prior convicted felon in Hernando, Mississippi. Carwell was wanted for eight years stemming from a federal gun charge in the Western District of Tennessee from 2016. On March 31, 2024, officers with the Hernando Police Department conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle Carwell was riding in, leading to his arrest and the discovery of seven firearms, including a stolen pistol, a rifle with an obliterated serial number, and a sawed-off shotgun.
Six of the guns were loaded, and Carwell pled guilty to the charge on a prior date. Senior U.S. District Court Michael P. Mills sentenced Carwell to 87 months imprisonment followed by a 3-year term of supervised release.
The arrest and sentencing of Carwell are a result of the collaborative efforts of the Hernando Police Department and the ATF. U.S. Attorney Scott F. Leary praised the law enforcement officers involved in the case, stating that their hard work has made the community safer.
The case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in combating gun violence and reducing the proliferation of illegal firearms. Carwell’s sentence serves as a deterrent to those who would seek to possess firearms illegally, and his capture brings closure to an eight-year manhunt.
