Marcus Brinkley, a 23-year-old Madison man, has been sentenced to 54 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. The crime occurred when Brinkley, who has prior felony convictions, was found with a loaded handgun in his motel room after a controlled delivery of narcotics. The incident happened in Madison, Wisconsin, and Brinkley pleaded guilty to the charge on February 27, 2026.
Law enforcement recovered the loaded handgun from Brinkley’s nightstand, and due to his prior convictions, he is prohibited from legally possessing firearms or ammunition. The investigation was conducted by the Dane County Narcotics Task Force and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force.
At sentencing, Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson considered the nature of Brinkley’s prior convictions and his conduct in this case, highlighting the danger Brinkley posed to the public. The judge balanced these aggravating factors with Brinkley’s young age to arrive at the sentence.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Louis Glinzak and is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating violent crime and protecting communities.
