Donald Smith, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Wisconsin 2025

⏱ 2 min read

A loaded handgun and a cell phone with a bullet hole were just the tip of the iceberg in the case against Donald Smith, a 31-year-old with a history of recklessness.

On July 2, 2025, law enforcement searched Smith’s Madison home and uncovered the Ruger 9mm handgun, a clear violation of his status as a convicted felon. Smith’s DNA was found on the firearm, and a spent projectile lay on the counter.

Smith’s prior conviction for first-degree reckless use of a dangerous weapon landed him a lifetime ban on gun ownership. But that didn’t stop him from getting caught with a loaded gun.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan brought the case to federal court, where U.S. District Judge William M. Conley sentenced Smith to a year and a day behind bars.

Conley took a hardline stance, citing the ‘potentially devastating consequences’ of Smith’s actions. In a glimmer of hope, the judge also encouraged Smith to seek counseling for unresolved issues.
