A sex offender who spent years scamming the system has been put away for good after a conviction in federal court. Mark Brummitt, 69, was sentenced to 6 years in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender, food stamp fraud, and using a counterfeit passport.
Brummitt’s rap sheet stretches back decades, with convictions for sex offenses against children between 1989 and 2005. After serving time, he was released from federal prison in 2022 and promptly disappeared to Mexico and Mozambique.
But Brummitt’s travels didn’t go unnoticed. When he returned to Wisconsin in 2025, he applied for and received $1,512 in food stamps, claiming to be living in Africa and lying about his income.
It all came crashing down when Brummitt tried to re-up his benefits in August 2025. That’s when he presented a counterfeit passport to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
Brummitt’s brazen scheme has earned him a long stay in federal prison, where he’ll have plenty of time to think about his crimes.
