Gary Drum, Abusive Sexual Contact, Montana 2015

PIERRE – A Mission, South Dakota man has been sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

According to court documents, 37-year-old Gary Drum was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on top of his prison sentence and five years of supervised release.

Drum was convicted of Abusive Sexual Contact in U.S. District Court, District of Montana, in 2015 and was required to register as a sex offender. Following his release from a tribal jail in 2023, Drum failed to update his address with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Sex Offender Registration Office, sparking a federal investigation.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sex exploitation and abuse, launched by the Department of Justice in 2006.

U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell praised the efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, who led the investigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Abby Roesler prosecuted the case, securing Drum’s conviction and subsequent sentence.

Drum was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service upon receiving his sentence.

The investigation into Drum’s activities is ongoing, with law enforcement agencies working to locate and apprehend individuals who exploit children and fail to register as required.

Project Safe Childhood has successfully prosecuted thousands of individuals for child sex crimes across the country since its inception.

Drum’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of sex offender registration and the consequences for those who fail to comply.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to bring justice to victims of child sex crimes.
