A disturbing case of exploitation has shaken the quiet town of Mahopac, New York, as 54-year-old John Towers, a resident of Mahopac, was taken into custody by federal authorities.
The charges brought against Towers include one count of sexual exploitation of a minor, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, and one count of possession of child pornography, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
According to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, Towers allegedly placed hidden cameras in a public bathroom in a privately owned park in Putnam County to record prepubescent minors. The recordings were then transferred to a hard drive.
Law enforcement seized a hard drive from Towers’ residence containing over 800 videos of females, including prepubescent females, using a bathroom. Approximately 78 of the videos had file names that included the term ‘yung.’
Towers was also found to possess DVDs containing video files he downloaded from the internet depicting prepubescent minors engaging in sexually explicit activity. On bail at the time of his arrest, Towers now faces serious consequences for his alleged crimes.
The prosecution is being handled by the Office’s White Plains Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcia S. Cohen in charge of the case.
As the investigation continues, the FBI is urging anyone with relevant information regarding Towers to come forward, calling 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324).
The charges against Towers are merely allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
