A shocking case of theft and deceit has unfolded in West Sacramento, California, as Shabina Debbie, 54, a former postal employee, pleaded guilty to theft of mail by a postal employee and possession with intent to distribute marijuana on March 14, 2023.
According to court documents, between October 2018 and February 2019, Debbie stole items from mail that had been entrusted to her in the course of her duties as a postal employee in Sacramento. The heinous crimes were uncovered through a thorough investigation by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.
The investigation revealed that Debbie had stolen packages containing a staggering amount of illicit goods, including over 3 pounds of marijuana. The discovery of these crimes led to the execution of a search warrant at Debbie’s home, where authorities found over $125,000 in cash.
Debbie, who was entrusted with the public’s mail, chose to abuse that trust for personal gain. Her actions not only compromised the security of the mail system but also put the public at risk of falling victim to her crimes.
As a result of her guilty plea, Debbie faces a maximum statutory penalty of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, the actual sentence will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in our public institutions. It also highlights the need for vigilance in protecting our mail system and the public’s trust.
Debbie’s sentencing is scheduled to take place on March 14, 2023, marking the next step in the judicial process for this shocking case of theft and deceit.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, has worked tirelessly to bring Debbie to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Denise N. Yasinow is prosecuting the case.
