Syracuse Man Convicted of Cocaine Trafficking Charges

A federal jury in Syracuse, New York has found Shaeem Grady, 29, guilty of three felony offenses related to cocaine trafficking and firearms possession.

The convictions stem from a traffic stop on March 22, 2013, when police observed Grady with a baggie of crack cocaine in his lap. When officers attempted to arrest him, Grady violently resisted and was found to be in possession of a 9mm handgun with 7 rounds in the magazine.

Grady’s arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Syracuse Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Geoffrey Brown.

Grady’s sentencing is scheduled for April 2015 before the Honorable Judge Frederick J. Scullin, Jr. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years for the conviction of Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime, as well as up to 20 years for the Possession with Intent to Distribute Cocaine Base count and up to 10 years for the Felon in Possession of a Firearm count.

Grady’s history of violent behavior is well-documented, including a 2002 conviction for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, which prohibited him from possessing a firearm.

In addition to his convictions, Grady was found to be in possession of $90 and a steak knife during the traffic stop.
