Buffalo Woman Sentenced for Marriage Fraud
A Buffalo woman was sentenced to one year of probation for her role in a marriage fraud scheme, authorities announced. Pauline Gichuri, 40, a Buffalo resident and native and citizen of Kenya, was convicted of conspiring to commit marriage fraud.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney John E. Rogowski, Gichuri agreed to pay a United States citizen $5000 to enter into a sham marriage in 2004. The marriage allowed Gichuri to remain in the United States, and she was subsequently naturalized in 2010.
However, because the citizenship was obtained through fraud, Gichuri may face de-naturalization and removal from the country. The sentencing marks the culmination of an investigation led by Special Agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the sentencing, which was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Arcara. The case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney John E. Rogowski.
The investigation was led by Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero, and involved a complex web of deceit and corruption. Gichuri’s actions were a clear attempt to circumvent the law and gain citizenship through fraudulent means.
The sentencing serves as a reminder of the seriousness with which the government takes immigration crimes. Those who attempt to exploit the system will be held accountable, and face severe consequences.
