A Memphis man has been sentenced to 75 months in federal prison for conspiracy to commit mail fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Shamari Johnson, 42, was charged in a two-count information with theft of mail and identity theft on April 18, 2019.
According to court documents, Johnson was stopped by Collierville police after a resident observed him stealing mail out of a mailbox.
Johnson’s scheme involved stealing mail, altering checks, and passing them at various stores, including a Wal-Mart in Ashland City, Tennessee.
Victims included K.M., who had a check stolen and altered, and R.B., who witnessed Johnson taking mail from his mailbox.
Johnson’s crimes were uncovered after investigators received a report from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Collierville police.
On January 29, 2020, investigators discovered hundreds of pieces of stolen mail, check stock, counterfeit checks, and fake IDs at Johnson’s residence in Cordova, Tennessee.
Johnson admitted to purchasing a Porsche using the identity of victim R.S. and obtaining a credit card in the victim’s name.
Johnson was sentenced to 75 months in federal prison, and his crimes resulted in losses of $59,247.
Johnson’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting personal identifying information and being vigilant about mail theft.
The sentencing brings an end to a lengthy investigation and highlights the need for continued efforts to combat mail fraud and identity theft.
