Maurice Butler, a 34-year-old resident of Mandeville, Louisiana, has been charged with violating the Federal Gun Control Act. According to a recent indictment, Butler was found to be in possession of a firearm, despite being a convicted felon.
The indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury on December 8, 2022, charges Butler with being a felon in possession of a firearm, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1).
If convicted, Butler faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a fine of up to $250,000.00, up to three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched by the federal government in 2001, PSN brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations to create safer neighborhoods.
The indictment was announced by U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans, who emphasized that the charge against Butler is merely an accusation and that he must be proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Kennedy is prosecuting the case.
Butler’s case highlights the importance of addressing gun violence and ensuring that those who possess firearms illegally are held accountable for their actions.
