Shank Possession Lands Feds on Hard Time
A former inmate at the United States Penitentiary in Waymart, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for possessing a sharpened weapon, also known as a shank.
Margarito Morales-Oliva, 35, a Mexican national, was charged in August 2014 and pleaded guilty in October of the same year. Morales-Oliva is currently serving a sentence and will serve the additional 2 years after its expiration.
‘This sentence demonstrates our commitment to keeping our prisons safe from the scourge of violence,’ said US Attorney Peter Smith in a statement. ‘The hard work of law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Special Investigation Section, is a testament to our dedication to justice.’
The case was investigated by the FBI and the Special Investigation Section at the USP federal prison in Waymart. Assistant US Attorney John Gurganus handled the prosecution.
According to officials, Morales-Oliva’s possession of the shank posed a threat to the safety of fellow inmates and corrections officers. The sentence aims to prevent such incidents and maintain order within the prison system.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of security measures within prisons and the need for vigilance in preventing the introduction of contraband.
In related news, the US Attorney’s Office is urging the public to report any suspicious activity or tip-offs regarding prison security breaches.
Margarito Morales-Oliva’s sentencing is a significant step in maintaining the integrity of the prison system. As the investigation and prosecution continue, the US Attorney’s Office remains committed to upholding justice and ensuring public safety.
