WASHINGTON, D.C. – Shaquille Taylor, 28, of Washington, D.C., is headed to prison for a full decade after a brazen high-speed chase in May 2022 left another driver fighting for his life. Taylor was sentenced yesterday to 12 years behind bars, a penalty handed down after a Superior Court jury found him guilty in November 2023.
The incident began around 2:00 AM on May 6, 2022, near 17th Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW, when a U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officer attempted a routine traffic stop. Taylor initially appeared to comply, but then inexplicably floored it, speeding away from the officer. What followed was a dangerous, escalating flight that culminated in a devastating crash.
Taylor blew through a red light at 12th Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW, traveling at nearly 100 miles per hour, before slamming into another vehicle. The impact left the victim with injuries so severe he required weeks on a ventilator and faces a lifetime of chronic pain. Taylor himself suffered a broken arm and leg in the wreck. A firearm was later recovered from his vehicle, adding another layer to the seriousness of the offense.
Prosecutors presented evidence demonstrating Taylor’s complete disregard for public safety. He was convicted of aggravated assault while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, fleeing a law enforcement officer, and destruction of property. The 12-year sentence reflects the severity of his actions and the lasting damage inflicted on the victim. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves stated the sentence sends a clear message that such reckless behavior will not be tolerated.
The investigation was a joint effort between the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division and the Metropolitan Police Department. Special Agent in Charge Michael Buck of the USSS and Chief Pamela Smith of the MPD praised the work of their officers and investigators. The U.S. Attorney’s Office also recognized the contributions of several staff members, including Paralegal Specialists Antoinette Sakamsa and Renee Prather, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kathleen Houck, Jamie Carter, Kathryn Bartz and Benjamin Helfand.
The victim’s long road to recovery serves as a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of reckless driving and fleeing from police. While Taylor will serve time for his actions, the victim will live with the physical and emotional scars of that night for the rest of his life. This case underscores the dangers faced by both law enforcement and innocent civilians on the streets of the nation’s capital.
