Sharena Seay, Money Laundering, Texas 2022

TYLER, TX – Sharena Seay, a 37-year-old woman from Jacksonville, Florida, is facing serious federal charges after an indictment revealed a sophisticated money laundering scheme fueled by drug trafficking. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas announced the indictment this week, alleging Seay used cryptocurrency to wash profits from the sale of dangerous synthetic drugs.

Seay allegedly peddled alpha-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone – commonly known as “flakka” – alongside other synthetic cathinones like Eutylone and alpha-PiHP to customers nationwide. The indictment details how Seay accepted cash payments for these controlled substances and then funneled that money through cryptocurrency transactions. This allowed her to purchase additional drugs on the dark web and actively conceal the source of her illicit income.

Investigators claim the scope of Seay’s laundering operation exceeded $1.2 million. The five-count indictment, returned by a federal grand jury on August 17, 2022, charges Seay with money laundering and aiding and abetting the offense. She was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge John D. Love and currently awaits further court proceedings.

This isn’t a lone wolf operation. The case falls under the umbrella of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a multi-agency initiative designed to dismantle major criminal organizations. OCDETF utilizes a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven approach, bringing together resources from various federal agencies to target high-level threats.

If convicted on each charge, Seay faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison. While the indictment represents a significant step in the investigation, it’s crucial to remember that Seay is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathaniel C. Kummerfeld prosecuting the case.

The use of cryptocurrency to mask criminal activity is a growing concern for law enforcement. This case serves as a stark reminder that while digital currencies offer anonymity, they are not immune to scrutiny, and those who attempt to use them for illegal purposes will be relentlessly pursued.
