Sharif Gray, Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime, Pennsylvania 2016

Sharif Gray, 25 of Easton, Pennsylvania, is facing federal charges tied to a loaded gun and 30 grams of methamphetamine found in his possession March 1, 2016. The indictment unsealed today charges Gray with one count of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and one count of convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Gray knowingly possessed a loaded Bersa .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol at the time of the incident—weapon and drugs both seized in Easton. The firearm charge is directly linked to the alleged drug distribution effort, amplifying the severity of the case under federal sentencing guidelines.

Gray’s criminal history plays a critical role in the charges. He had previously been convicted in a Pennsylvania court of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison, making his possession of the firearm a federal offense. That prior conviction turns what might have been a state-level drug case into a full-blown federal prosecution.

If convicted on all counts, Gray faces a total maximum penalty of life imprisonment. That includes a mandatory minimum of 10 years for the firearm charge, which must run consecutive to any other sentence. He could also be fined up to $4,500,000 and face a mandatory minimum of 4 years of supervised release, extending up to a lifetime.

The investigation was a joint operation between the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Allentown Division, the Northampton County District Attorney’s Office, and the City of Easton Police Department. Authorities say cooperation across agencies was key in building the case against Gray, underscoring regional efforts to crack down on drug-related gun crimes.

Prosecution is being handled by Special Assistant United States Attorney Kelly Lewis Fallenstein and Assistant United States Attorney Kishan Nair. No trial date has been set. Gray remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
