Bank Robbers Lead Police on High-Speed Chase
Sharif Layton, 38, and Jamal Cooper, 29, both of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, have been indicted on charges of conspiracy, bank robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
The indictment alleges that Layton and Cooper robbed the Juniata Valley Bank located in Burnham, Pennsylvania, on March 27, 2017, making off with over $20,000 in cash. The pair was in possession of a .40 caliber, Sig Sauer handgun during the robbery, which is illegal for convicted felons to possess.
Layton and Cooper led police on a high-speed chase through multiple jurisdictions before their vehicle was disabled using spike strips. The chase involved officers from the Mifflin County Regional Police Department and the Pennsylvania State Police.
The investigation into the bank robbery was a collaborative effort between the Mifflin County Regional Police Department, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the FBI Capital City Violent Crimes Task Force.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott R. Ford is prosecuting the case, which is part of the Violent Crime Reduction Partnership (VCRP) initiative. The VCRP aims to combat the spread of violent crime in the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Indictments are only allegations, and all persons charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in court. If convicted, the maximum penalty for these offenses could include life imprisonment, a term of supervised release, and a fine.
The case highlights the aggressive tactics used by bank robbers who are willing to put the lives of innocent people at risk. It also underscores the importance of community partnerships in combating violent crime.
