A Rochester man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge related to his failure to update his sex offender registration status.
Shawn Peterkin, 39, was convicted in 2011 of taking indecent liberties with a child in North Carolina and was required to register as a sex offender. In 2014, Peterkin relocated to South Carolina and registered as a sex offender, but failed to update his registration in 2015.
A warrant was issued for his arrest in November 2015, and in February 2016, the United States Marshal’s Service found Peterkin residing in Rochester, NY. He admitted to being wanted in South Carolina for failure to register as a sex offender and to not registering with any authorities in New York.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Marshal’s Service under the direction of Charles Salina.
Peterkin’s plea is the culmination of an investigation that spanned several years.
He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
Sentencing is scheduled for November 29, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. before Judge Siragusa.
