A Council Bluffs man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing child pornography, according to a recent federal court decision.
Shawn Sidney Beu, 38, was sentenced to 240 months in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release, for possession of child pornography. Beu pleaded guilty to the charges on April 4, 2017.
The investigation began with a tip received by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which reported that a cloud storage facility used by Beu contained child pornography. The Council Bluffs Police Department and Department of Homeland Security conducted the investigation.
Beu’s residence was searched, and numerous computer devices containing images of child pornography were found. Some of these images were determined to have been created by Beu in his residence. In addition to federal charges, Beu was convicted in Pottawattamie County District Court of several counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.
United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel announced the sentencing. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
Beu’s sentence marks a significant blow to those who would seek to exploit children through the possession of child pornography. The investigation and prosecution of such crimes are ongoing, with law enforcement agencies working tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice.
Those with information regarding similar crimes are encouraged to contact the authorities. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting suspicious activity and the consequences of engaging in such heinous crimes.
