Stuart Doctor Charged in $926,802 Health Care Fraud Indictment

Ariana Fajardo Orshan, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, announced the indictment of Sheetal Kanar Kumar, M.D., 48, of Stuart, for 26 counts of health care fraud.

Kumar, an obstetrician and gynecologist, owned and operated Advanced Healthcare for Women in Stuart, Florida. From at least January 2014 until July 2017, Kumar submitted or caused the fraudulent submission of claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies, totaling over $926,802 in payments.

The indictment alleges that Kumar sought money for specific health care benefits, items, and services that were not provided as billed. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel E. Funk.

U.S. Attorney Fajardo Orshan commended the investigative efforts of HHS-OIG, FBI, and Florida Medicaid Fraud Control Unit in this matter.

Kumar appeared in federal court and was arraigned on the 26 counts of health care fraud (Case No. 18-14063-CR-Marra). The trial is currently set to begin in Fort Pierce on November 13, 2018, before U.S. District Judge Kenneth A. Marra.

According to Orshan, an indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence of guilt. Kumar is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
