St. Thomas, USVI – Shelica Baxter, a 26-year-old resident of St. Thomas, made her initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ruth Miller today on charges of receiving firearms through the mail. Baxter was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond with a preliminary hearing set for April 12, 2017.
The complaint filed by the Department of Justice states that Baxter was apprehended by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents at the Sugar Estate Post Office in St. Thomas, where she had received a package containing two firearms. Baxter now faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
Acting United States Attorney Joycelyn Hewlett emphasized that the complaint is merely a charging document and does not prove guilt. Baxter remains innocent until proven otherwise.
This case is currently under investigation by HSI and being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Everard E. Potter.
According to federal law, receiving firearms through the mail is a serious offense, and Baxter’s arrest serves as a stark reminder of the penalties associated with such violations.
Baxter’s bond hearing comes amidst an ongoing effort by federal authorities to crack down on illegal firearm activity, highlighting the importance of vigilance in preventing gun trafficking in the Virgin Islands and beyond.
