ST. LOUIS, MO – In a shocking display of disregard for the law, Sheltkeem Brown, 31, of University City, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for his part in a brazen gun crime that left authorities scrambling to keep up.
On June 25, 2022, chaos erupted in the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood when Brown, a convicted felon, fled from police after a shooting in the area of North Garrison Avenue and Magazine Street. Witnesses reported hearing shots fired before Brown sped away in a maroon Chevrolet Traverse, ignoring officers’ lights and sirens as he careened recklessly through the streets.
Brown’s high-speed chase eventually came to an end when he crashed into a parked vehicle at North Sarah Street and Cottage Avenue. He then attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended by authorities. Inside the stolen Traverse, officers found a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol with an obliterated serial number, as well as fentanyl capsules in a plastic baggie in Brown’s pocket.
The case against Brown has been a joint effort between the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Goeke is prosecuting the case, which has been part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative.
PSN is a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country. By bringing together law enforcement and community leaders, the program seeks to foster trust and legitimacy, support community-based organizations, and set strategic enforcement priorities.
Brown’s sentence is a harsh reminder of the consequences of engaging in gun crime. As a convicted felon, he was barred from possessing a firearm, and his actions put the public at risk. The sentence will serve as a deterrent to others who would consider engaging in similar behavior.
The case is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against gun violence in our communities. By working together, we can reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
