Mail Thief Sentenced to Probation
In a shocking case of betrayal of public trust, a former postal worker in Mississippi has been sentenced for stealing mail from the very people she was supposed to serve.
Sherice E. Davis, 34, of Canton, was sentenced to a 12 month term of probation for the federal crime of mail theft by a postal employee, announced U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca and Scott Pierce, Inspector in Charge with the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, Southern Area Field Office.
According to Court documents, Davis was a Rural Carrier Associate and delivered mail along a rural route in Hinds County. But after receiving complaints of mail theft along Davis’s route, United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General agents launched an investigation.
On March 9, 2022, agents found Davis in possession of opened mail she did not deliver. This was the evidence they needed to bring her to justice.
Davis was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2022, and she entered a guilty plea in October 2022. The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly T. Purdie prosecuted the case, ensuring that Davis faced the consequences of her actions.
Mail theft is a serious crime that affects not only the victims but also the trust in our postal system. It is disappointing to see a public servant like Davis abuse her position for personal gain.
